Port Phillip Bay, Victoria, Australia – interesting statistics!

  • Deepest Point is 24metres,
    just under 1/2 averages below 8m.
  • 264kms of coastline surrounds the bay.
  • Approximately 80 Bottle-nosed Dolphins (Tursiops aduncus) live in the bay – they do get visitors from time to time
  • Australian Fur Seals live in the bay. A special ‘pergola’ like landing was built off Sorrento for the old fellas and young bucks. Container ships go past less than 500m from their landing
  • St. Kilda pier is home to a small colony of penguins (Eudyptula minor); they share the protected area with native water rats (Rakali)
  • In 1980 off BonBeach a Humpback Whale stranded itself on the beach
